Snowmelt System Snares Industry Honor
The hybrid PP-RCT/PEX system keeps the path clear for thousands of students who daily transverse Utah’s longest pedestrian bridge.
To enhance the safety of its students as they walk across the longest pedestrian bridge in the state during the winter, Utah Valley University (UVU) took advantage of the technology and the many benefits that a hydronic snowmelt system would deliver.

The project design called for two zones for each apartment and one zone for each common area per floor Thermal Engineering installed two HTP Elite high efficiency 399,000 BTUH dual condensing boilers Thermal Engineering installed two HTP SuperStor Ultra indirect storage tanks to supply domestic hot water The boilers are piped primary/secondary with two Grundfos Magna3 variable speed pumps on the secondary loop A reverse return distribution system of 1½-in., 1¼-in., 5/8-in. and ½-in. Rehau RauPEX PEX piping runs to three Viega manifolds for each side of the project To control the entire mechanical system, tekmar controls with remote sensors were installed.

Summer is here, and with it the return of snowmelt season. The warmer months are the ideal time for installing snowmelt systems; ice and snow on the ground make it much more difficult to lay tubing, and the warmer temperatures mean lower demand on existing heating systems that may need to be shut down for some period as new systems are connected in.
